Network Creation Games: Think Global - Act Local

چکیده
We investigate a non-cooperative game-theoretic model for the formation of communi-cation networks by selfish agents. Each agent aims for a central position at minimumcost for creating edges. In particular, the general model (Fabrikant et al., PODC’03)became popular for studying the structure of the Internet or social networks. De-spite its significance, locality in this game was first studied only recently (Bilò et al.,SPAA’14), where a worst case locality model was presented, which came with a highefficiency loss in terms of quality of equilibria. Our main contribution is a new andmore optimistic view on locality: agents are limited in their knowledge and actionsto their local view ranges, but can probe different strategies and finally choose thebest. We study the influence of our locality notion on the hardness of computing bestresponses, convergence to equilibria, and quality of equilibria. Moreover, we comparethe strength of local versus non-local strategy-changes. Our results address the gapbetween the original model and the worst case locality variant. On the bright side, our efficiency results are in line with observations from the original model, yet wehave a non-constant lower bound on the price of anarchy.

Architecture in Transition Era toward Network Society
Technology affected human life in many ways in different eras of mankind history. Today, the information and telecommunication technology has revolutionized basic structures of human life. Changes are from the whole to the parts and vice versa, which include family and society too. Family lost its former structure in the information age and differentiated from patriarchy family. Societies have ...
متن کاملGenomics: Think Global, Act Local
Long a slogan for environmentalists, ‘‘think global, act local’’ could be a new rallying cry for biologists. As genome-wide techniques advance and their costs drop, scientists are expanding into larger and larger territories—metagenomics, global proteomic approaches, and analyses of thousands of genomes. These massive data sets are opening up new possibilities for understanding some of the smal...

In this paper we reflect on the conference theme „Systemic Development: Local Solutions in a Global Environment‟ noting that this echoes sentiments captured in the slogans „Think global, act local‟ and the complement „Think local, act global‟. We argue that these slogans embrace inherently systemic insights, but insights which current social and organisational theory, including that inspired by...
متن کاملReassessing the “think Global, Act Local” Mandate: Evaluation and Synthesis
There is no simple formula for developing and implementing successful business strategies across national borders. A popular approach to this challenge is to “think global, act local.” Some argue, however, that maximum consistency across global markets is critical, citing examples such as CocaCola, whose emphasis on quality, brand recognition, and a small world theme has been successful in a nu...
متن کاملOn the Path to UHC – Global Evidence Must Go Local to Be Useful; Comment on “Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Is Published: A Theory of Change Is Needed for Translating Evidence to Health Policy”
The Disease Control Priorities (DCP) publications have pioneered new ways of thinking about investing in health. We agree with Norheim, that a useful first step to advance efforts to translate DCP’s global evidence into local health priorities, is to develop a clear Theory of Change (ToC). However, a ToC that aims to define how global evidence (DCP and others) can be used to inform national pol...
